Winter is upon us and getting stranded in your vehicle during cold and freezing conditions can be dangerous if you're not prepared. An emergency travel bag contains the equipment, supplies, and medications needed to provide an initial assessment and to manage life-threatening conditions.
Your emergency kit should have some of the following basic supplies:
A heart attack is a medical emergency and is extremely life threatening. A heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the heart. Without blood, tissue loses oxygen and dies. At the first sign of cardiac related symptoms 911 should be called. The heart can stop beating even if the symptoms are mild.
Heart attack symptoms includes:
#1: Chest pain, pressure, squeezing, and fullness
#2: Arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach pain or discomfort
#3: Shortness of breath, nausea, and lightheadedness
#4: Breaking out in a cold sweat
#5: Nausea and vomiting
#6: Low back discomfort (more common in women)
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die. Strokes are "life threatening" and require immediate medical attention and 911 should be called.
